Tuesday Teacher Talk: Amy
This Tuesday we talked with Amy Mele for our weekly Tuesday Teacher Talk to get her take on yoga, teaching, and life.
When did you started working for Yoga 4 Change?
I started working for Yoga 4 Change when Kathryn first started it! I’ll never forget our first meeting at MBody Southside!
What inspired to become a yoga teacher?
CHANGE inspired me to be a yoga teacher! I wanted to help people experience the incredible transformation from walking zombie to being fully present in their lives for themselves and others.
Why did you choose to work with Yoga 4 Change?
I chose to work for Yoga 4 Change because I heard about the incredible work they were doing with the female inmates at the Community Transition Center. Kathryn and Dawn told me stories of how these women were using yoga as a vessel for forgiveness, empowerment, and self-esteem builders.
Share with us a funny, sad, interesting, or memorable story about your teaching.
A memorable teaching story is when I was with Dawn last summer in her minivan. We were headed down to Hilliard to teach to at-risk young girls in a summer program. Right as we hit the edge of town, Dawn realized her minivan was out of gas. Luckily, right at the dead end of the road was a gas station. As we rolled across the intersection, completely out of gas, we sighed a huge relief and thanked the universe for helping us! We knew it was our mission that day to deliver an AWESOME practice to those girls! I will never forget that day!
What is your favorite drink?
My favorite drink is Kale Lemonade from Earth Fare!! TRY IT!!!!
Can you name one thing Yoga has helped you get through?
Wow! Just ONE thing yoga has helped me get through?? That is a tough question. There have just been so many I could write you a book! However, the biggest thing was what brought me to yoga. I started at the MBody Neptune Studio in 2010 due to a terrible break-up. I was with a guy who told me he loved me, wanted to get married and have kids, but those were all lies. On a Tuesday night, he called me up over the phone to break up with me. It truly and utterly broke my heart. It took me 2 years to get over him, going to yoga almost every day.
What’s your favorite yoga pose and why?
My favorite yoga pose has to be airplane! I always feel like I am flying!
How can yoga help people change their lives?
Yoga can help people change their lives by awakening them to how they show up on their mat is how they show up everywhere and with everyone. It can also help them choose differently. Instead of showing up disconnected, they can show up connected!
Why should people support Yoga 4 Change?
People NEED to support Yoga 4 Change because it is helping to heal all of the broken people we have here in Florida. They NEED to support it so people in facilities such as jails or rehabilitation centers can choose differently for themselves. They can choose to be a YES for themselves for mending their wounds.
